A nineteenth century engineering feat, the 88 km. long narrow gauge, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was constructed between 1879 and 1888 by Gillanders Arbuthnot and Company. Built with private capital, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway reduced the journey time from Siliguri to Darjeeling in North-Eastern India from 4-5 days to under 12 hours - thus enabling Darjeeling to develop as a hill station and holiday destination. UNESCO has now granted it the status of World Heritage Site.
